Avocado sizes confuse many new buyers because the US and European systems count fruit in different cartons.
US counts (25 lb / 11.3 kg carton)
The size is the number of fruits in a 25 lb carton. Size 32 means large fruit (about 300–350 g); size 84 means small fruit (about 130–150 g). Common sizes are 32, 36, 40, 48, 60, 70 and 84.
EU sizes (4 kg single-layer carton)
The size is the number of fruits in a 4 kg carton. Size 10 is very large (around 370–400 g); size 32 is small (around 120–130 g). Popular retail sizes are 16 to 22.
Approximate equivalence
- US 32–36 ≈ EU 10–12 (very large)
- US 40–48 ≈ EU 14–18 (large, premium retail)
- US 60 ≈ EU 20–22 (medium, most popular)
- US 70–84 ≈ EU 24–32 (small, value and food service)
Dry matter and ripeness
Dry matter (minimum around 21–23 % depending on the market) indicates maturity and taste. Fruit is shipped hard and green or pre-conditioned for faster ripening at destination.
Which size to order?
Retail chains usually choose medium sizes; food service and processors buy smaller, cheaper sizes. See our fresh Hass avocados and ask for a weekly programme.
