Brazil is one of the leading suppliers of Halal beef to the Gulf. Its grass-fed Nelore cattle produce lean beef suited to Middle Eastern cooking, and many SIF plants operate dedicated Halal slaughter lines.
How Halal certification works
Halal slaughter in Brazilian plants is performed by trained Muslim slaughtermen under the supervision of Brazilian Halal certification bodies. These bodies are accredited or recognised by authorities in importing countries. A Halal certificate is issued for each consignment and travels with the veterinary certificate.
Popular cuts for the GCC
- Forequarters and hindquarters for local butchery
- Boneless topside, silverside and knuckle for shawarma and mince
- Striploin, ribeye and tenderloin for hotels and restaurants
- Tripe, liver and tongue
Labelling and documents
Labels are usually bilingual Arabic/English with production and expiry dates. Some countries require product or importer registration (for example with SFDA in Saudi Arabia). Documents include the commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, veterinary health certificate, Halal certificate and certificate of origin, often legalised.
